Sydney Design – ‘GB House’ by Renato D’Ettorre Architects
As part of our series focussing on award winning local architecture and design, we look at ‘GB House’ by Sydney based architects Renato D’Ettorre.
This magnificent house in Gordons Bay has won multiple awards including the coveted 2019 Wilkinson Award – The most significant residential architecture prize awarded in the state of NSW.
About GB House
Positioned in a magical site above Gordons Bay, this house embodies the spirit of seaside living – endless ocean, rocky headland and the ideal north-east aspect. The design is discreet in scale, has a quiet focus and layered materiality, and is sensitive to both site and neighbours providing mystery and privacy along one of Sydney’s busiest coastlines.
“It’s a slow process of revealing the view, where you walk in and have just glimpses which tantalise and tease you and prolongs that final arrival,” said Mr D’Ettorre, 63, who worked early on in legendary architect Harry Seidler’s office.
The Project
Conceptually, the starting point began with Gordons Bay. The clients’ like simplicity and the house needed to speak their language: lean and raw and full of spatial experiences that respond to the seaside location. Bedrooms, living, kitchen, music room, cellar, study, teenage retreat and terraces protected from the weather were all part of the brief. Spaces are designed to connect with the view, but often in more subtle layered ways to create interiors that are private and introspective too. Materials had to be robust: brick, stone and concrete are left raw and wrap, reveal and protect.
